Womanist Poetic Preaching
On July 20th, I preached at New Roots AME Church in Boston for their virtual service, as part of a summer series called New Roots in Nature.
I offered a sermon titled “being property once myself: when living things come alive”—a womanist reflection on ecological vocation, devocations (calls away from our humanity), and the aliveness of Black life, rooted in the poetry of Lucille Clifton and the liberating call of Exodus 3.
In it, I explored what it means to be called away from roles that diminish our humanity and toward a vocation that honors our created nature. I drew from my own story as a Haitian womanist, shaped by poetic imagination, rest as a spiritual discipline, and the sacred testimony of survival.
